Resumen:
The scrap used in the process of obtaining steel by Electric Arc Furnace is classified by a process of crushing and separation of ferrous metals. The remaining non-ferrous fraction is a homogeneous mixture containing plastic, rubber, glass, paper, sand, soil, and residual metal parts. These materials are disposed of in dumps or landfills, thus becoming an environmental problem.On the other hand, iron oxides are of special interest due to their natural abundance, low cost, and interesting chemistry. These oxides exist in different structural forms, such as hematite (α-Fe2O3), magnetite (Fe3O4), and goethite (FeOOH). The use of these materials as adsorbents of contaminants in water (heavy metals, dyes, pharmaceuticals) has been described.
