Resumen:
Micropaleontology is a very well established discipline in Europe, America, Africa and Asia and it is a valuable tool in basic and applied geology and paleobiology. It also complements interdisciplinary studies on climate change and and forensic studies apart from the traditional uses in biostratigraphy, paleoenvironments, and paleoecology. The first South American and Antarctic Micropaleontology Symposium took place in Corrientes, Argentina in 2002, during the VII Congreso Argentino de Paleontología y Bioestratigrafía. Since then, both meetings have been associated. The present book, ?Advances in South American Micropaleontology: Selected papers of the XI Argentine Paleontological Congress?, intends to provide an update on the research carried out by South American micropaleontologist in the fields of microfossils such as foraminifera, ostracods, calcareous nannofossils, diatoms, present in the geological record.Their research was presented and discussed in the IV Simposio of Micropaleontología de America del Sur and Antártida in the forum of the XI Congreso the la Asociacion de la Paleontológica Argentina (CAPA 2016) which took place in General Roca, Río Negro, Argentina from 17th to 21st October 2016. The symposium was well attended by Brazilian, Colombian, Ecuadorian and Argentinean scientists. There were 23 presentations and posters. The editors acknowledge and thank Dr. J. Rabassa for his invite to publish some of the research presented at the IV Simposio of Micropaleontología de America del Sur y Antártida in a Springer Special Volume in the Serie Springer Earth System Science and for his support. Thanks are also expressed to those researchers from several countries that helped us as reviewers and they improved the original manuscripts. The book consists of nine chapters. The papers are written by single authors or interdisciplinary group of authors, highlighting the team approach to research.
