Resumen:
A recent internet search revealed the homonymy of the generic name Notolophus, proposed by Bond, Reguero, Vizca¨ªno and Marenssi (2006: 166) for an Early Eocene-Late Eocene Antarctic sparnotheriodontid litoptern. The generic name Notolophus was erected by Germar (1812) for living tussock moths (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), but presently Notolophus is a junior objective synonym of Orgyia Ochsenheimer, 1810 (see Neave, 1939; Riotte, 1979; Watson et al., 1980; Pitkin and Jenkins, 2004; ION, 2008). Due to the generic name Notolophus being preoccupied, according to Article 53 and Article 60 of the current edition of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN, 1999), the name of the extinct sparnotheriodontid becomes a junior homonym, and it must be rejected and replaced. We propose the replacement name Notiolofos (Notios, is derived from the Greek ¦Í¦Ï¦Ó¦Ï¦Ò, south, in reference to the geographical area where the taxon was found; and lofos is derived from the Greek ¦Ë¦Ï¦Õ¦Ï¦Ò, lophs, crests). Consequently, the new name retains the same etymological meaning as the previous one. The name of the species of the monotypic genus Notiolofos therefore becomes Notiolofos arquinotiensis (Bond, Reguero, Vizca¨ªno and Marenssi, 2006), comb. nov.
