Resumen:
Nanoarchitectonicsbased on molecules of biological origin or bio-active components for thecreation of hierarchical systems with tailored structure and properties is anarea of growing interest. Thus, the S-layer proteins isolated from bacteria andarchaea emerge as a promising building blocks for the design of new structuresgiven their unique characteristics. Due to the presence of well-definedreaction sites in S-layer proteins self-assembled structures both in dispersionand on different surfaces, it is possible to use them for the preparation ofmetallic nanoparticles. This chapter thus presents the most relevantaspects of the S-layer proteins with particular attention to their use throughdifferent strategies for the preparation of arrangements of metallicnanoparticles and nanostructured systems containing metallic nanoparticles forvarious applications.
