A number of criteria to be used in IIR adaptive filtering are been proposed in the literature. Particularly, the Steiglitz-McBride method is presented as an alternative to the Output Error method, with th main purpose of generating suitable solutions for the insufficient order system identification application. In this work, some general properties of the SM method are analyzed. Through this study, a formulation to simplify the analysis of the statonary points, specially in insufficient order system identification applications, is proposed. Several examples using both the ordinary differential equation (ODE) associated with the SM method and the formulation presented are also included.
