Profiles with cover-beds and redeposited layers lying at different levels of the so-called Patagonian Gravels are described from Patagonia, south of 45° S. The cover-beds, whose Quaternary origin is discussed, are widely distributed. They show periglacial features with wedge-like structures, which appear as parts of patterned ground on the fossil soil-surfaces. The depth of the wedge-like structures and their diameter are less than 1 m. Therefore periglacial processes together with desiccation processes, especially in clay-rich material, are likely to have generated these forms.
