Resumen:
Phacepholis Horn is a monophyletic genus of North American weevils of the tribe Naupactini. It was previously treated as subgenus of Pantomorus Schoenherr and herein elevated to the generic rank, because Pantomorus is probably polyphyletic. The monophyly of Phacepholis is mainly justified by the synapomorphies of the female genitalia. The genus includes five species: P. elegans Horn, P. viridis (Champion) [new combination and new synonymy with Pantomorus pallidulus Emden and Pantomorus elegans Buchanan], P. candidus Horn [new synonymy with Pantomorus texanellus Buchanan], P. oscurus Horn and P. planitiatus (Buchanan) [new combination]. The single most parsimonious cladogram obtained using the phylogenetic package PAUP, shows a sequence from the primitive to the most derived species as follows: P. viridis, P. elegans, P. candidus, P. planitiatus and P. obscurus. The ancestor of Phacepholis would have reached the United States from Central America during the Eocene, with the northward advance of the tropical forest retreated southward. The revision includes a redescription of the genus and its species, a dichotomous key, habitus photographs, line drawings of genitalia, and maps of distribution.
