Resumen:
The petrographic and geochemical study carried out on the basaltic outcrops of the Marayes-El Carrizal triassic basin, San Juan, Argentina, resulted with the following findings. Most of the basalts are classified as trachybasalts, derived from a transitional magma ranging from calk-alkaline to alkaline. The basalts were erupted overlying the crystalline basement in the Early Permian, previous to the beginning of a generalized  extensional stage. This study suggests that the basic magmatism was probably generated in the back-arc region of an active subduction system emplaced in the western Gondwana margin.
