Resumen:
The present geological reconnaissance of the Fuegian Andes contributes to establish a comprehensive stratigraphic scheme for the region. A highly deformed metamorphic basement (Lapataia Formation) of possible Paleozoic age is overlaid by the Lemaire Formation (Middle to Late Jurassic) composed by acidic volcanics and pyroclastic rocks. The identification of several facies in the Yahgan Formation (Tithonian-Early Cretaceous) characterized by black shales, ophiolitic rocks, tuffs and turbiditic sequences, a lowed to reconstruct the different sedimentary environments. The marine beds of The Rio Claro Formation (Paleocene) and the continental deposits of the Sloggett Formation overlie with angular unconformity Mesozoic rocks. Glacial and alluvial deposits constitute extensive peat plains. The structure is characterized by the superposition of Gondwanic, Patagonidic and Andic movements which control the tectonic evolution of the region.
