Resumen:
A thick sedimentary Mesozoic sequence of marine and continental origin is recognized in the southern segment of the Cordillera Principal. From the Neocomian onwards thick clastic continental sediments were deposited in elongated intermountain basins. The main structural features are tilted folds related to submeridional trending thrusts with typical east vergence. The increasing of the inestability of the basin, wich started in the Early Cretaceous gave as a result the transverse shortening of the basin, its uplift and finally the developing of intermountain basins during Senonian times.
