Resumen:
On the eastern foothills of the Andes between 25º30' and 30º S extends an almost continuous ophiolite belt, The ophiolite assemblages were emplaced during Ordovician times aling the western border of Precordillera and outline the eary Paleozoic continental margin of a Cambro-Ordovician carbonate platform. Osolated patches of both the ophiolites and the carbonate platform extend as far as 35º S. The ophiolite belt is tectonically dismembered and the following lithological types are present: tectonized ultramafics, stratified mafic cumulates, peridotites and piroxenites, dyke swarms, basaltic flows and sills. geochemical trends or RREE and trace elements show highly incompatible elements enrichment suggesting that the ophiolite rocks are derived from mantle sources located beneath plume-influenced ridge-segments.
