Resumen:
Almost all electro-optically active polymers have p-electron units as building blocks in their structure. Another fundamental structural feature, which defines the polymer electro-optical properties, is the unit linking the p-electron systems. Active units are linked in conjugated polymers by also unsaturated units and the polymer electro-optical properties are intrinsic [1]. Segmented conjugated polymers have non interacting ot weakly interacting active units isolated by saturated spacers [2]. Therefore, the polymer electro-optical properties are rather similar to the properties of their building blocks whereas the polymeric state is of importance by its contribution to the film-forming and mechanical properties of the material. We present here the synthesis of a series of segmented conjugated polymers with the rigid units linked in meta positions of the aromatic rings and without long lateral chains. All reported segmented polymers have been designed with the units linked in the para position and almost all of them have long lateral chains in order to impart processability. However, as far as we know, 3a-c, linked in meta positions had the highest solubilities found for any kind of segmented conjugated polymer with or without lateral chains. We attributed these properties to the repeating unit topology. Thus, 4, with units linked in para positions, showed a lower solubility despite its lower molecular weigth and shorter repeating unit length [3].
