Resumen:
In 2012 a new disease was observed on wheat seeds in routine surveys of wheat samples (Triticum aestivum L.) collected from different cultivars in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The causal agent was isolated and Koch postulates were demonstrated. Morphological examinations of single-spore isolates showed the fungus Pithomyces chartarum (Leptosphaerulina chartarum. The ITS gene region was sequenced and analyzed to corroborate morphological characterization of the fungus. Because of the uncertainty regarding the pathogenicity of the genus in relation to wheat plants the present study was undertaken. P. chartarum isolates produced secondary metabolites including alternariol (AOH), alternariol mono-methyl ether (AME), altenuene (ALT), tentoxin (TEN ), tenuazonic acid (TA) and altertoxine I (ALTX-I). Pathogenicity tests determined the fungus is a new pathogen of wheat in Argentina.
