The synthesis of analogues of 6P-bromopenicillanic acid (1) and the sulphone of penicillanic acid (Z), where the 3~-carboxyl group has been transformed into 3a- hydroxymethyl, fluoromethyl and cyano groups and the attempted transformation into a 3a-formyl group are described. These analogues showed no significant b-lactamase inhibitory activity against B. cereus P-lactamase
