Analysis of isomeric cresols by gas chromatography

The analysis of isomeric cresols is difficult because of their similar volatilities and high polarities. The situation is specially complicated in the case of industrial synthesis-plant samples because of the presence of phenol and of the very high concentration (90%) of p-cresol. A gas chromatographic method is described, employing columns packed with Bentone 34 plus Castorwax on diatomaceous supports; the best results were obtained with Chromosorb P AW DMCS. The symmetry of the peaks were excellent for these kind of compounds
