This volume contains the scientific contributions of the participants to the First La Plata International School on Astronomy and Geophysics, which was held at the Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas of the University of La Plata in March 2008. The School was devoted to the topic "Compact Objects and their Emission". The articles cover a variety of topics, from neutron stars to black holes of all scales. All papers were subject to peer review by experts in the field. Altogether, this book provides a good overview of an ever expanding field and is the ideal companion to the monographic book "Compact Objects and their Emission" published in the Book Series of the Argentine Astronomical Society.
