Principal Component Analysis of galaxies in the direction of the Fornax cluster using S-PLUS data

Resumen:
Using data from the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS), we aim at statistically characterizing the galaxy population of the Fornax cluster (D ≈ 20 Mpc) in the 12 optical bands of the survey. We work on a total area of more than 45 square degrees corresponding to the combination of 23 fields. To reduce redundant information, we performed a principal component analysis (PCA) on the structural and photometric parameters of a galaxy sample of spectroscopically confirmed members of Fornax. This control sample was compared with a sample of spectroscopically confirmed background galaxies in order to detect the main differences displayed by both samples. Our main goal is to apply the results of that analysis to a third sample of galaxies with no radial velocities in order to identify new Fornax members not catalogued before. Though S-PLUS is expected to provide photo-zs, this technique will not be suitable to identify new members at the Fornax distance (de Lima et al. 2022).
