Abstract                     1,3-Dipolar cycloadditions are one of the most powerful methods for the construction of a variety of five-membered heterocycles. Particularly, nitrile oxide chemistry has been widely used to obtain isoxazoline and isoxazole rings. These heterocycles are key intermediates for the synthesis of a great number of natural products; in addition, these systems show interesting biological applications. In this review we present the advances in these cycloaddition reactions, focusing on the use of new reagents, novel synthetic methodologies and unconventional heating techniques, as well as stereochemical aspects related to the synthesis of enantiomerically pure compounds.
