Resumen:
Obesityhas grown to epidemic proportions worldwide. The effect of maternal nutritionalstatus on reproduction has a great public health interest. It is knowing thatobesity alters the reproduction environment. Cafeteria diet (CAF) is the animalmodel used for the study of obesity that more closely reflects western diethabits. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is used for the treatment of several pathologiesin which CoQ10 improves the reproductive outcome. However, there are fewstudies in which CoQ10 effects is evaluated under obesity conditions. The aimof this work was to evaluate the effect of CoQ10  administration on CAF diet inducedobesity. For that purpose, 22day old female Wistar rats were divided into 2 groups; that were fed ad libitum with standard rodent chowdiet (Control groups) and CAF (Obese groups). The later increased there are bodyweight after 7 weeks of diet protocol. After that, half rats of each groupreceived CoQ10 (5 mg/kg) orally for 13 days; while the others received vehicle.Ctrl, Ctrl+CoQ10, Obese and Obese+Coq10 animals were sacrificed on estrusphase, blood and ovaries were collected. CAF increased glycemia, serumtriglycerides and total cholesterol (to an increase in LDL). CoQ10 did notmodify these parametres. Glucose- and insulin-tolerance tests did not showeddifferences among groups. Moreover, CAF altered the ovarian function since itdecreased the number of secondary and pre-ovulatory follicles and corpora lutea(CL). In the Obese+CoQ10 group the number of CL were normalized. So, it can beconclude that CAF induce obesity that is not associated to glucose intolerance, neither insulin resistance; but CAF induce hypertriglyceridemia andhypercholesterolemia. Moreover, CAF reduces the ovulation rates. CoQ10normalize ovulation without modifying the metabolic alterations induced byobesity. Further studies are needed to clarify the effect and mechanisms ofCoQ10.
