Resumen:
We study the conditions for a nilpotent Lie group to decompose into subgroups that have square integrable (relative discrete series) unitary representations. For those groups we show that the Plancherel formula is easily described in terms of the given square integrable subgroups. We also present a number of examples of interest in harmonic analysis, differential equations and differential geometry.
