Resumen:
Four species of Stigeoclonium from Argentina were studied by means of transmission electron microscopy and light microscopy. Data on the prostrate system and zoospore germination facilitated the species identification. Chromosome number of each species was determined. In S. aestivale the erect system was more developed than the prostrate system, zoospore germination was predominantly of erect type and the chromosome number was 8. In S. tenue both systems were well developed, zoospore germination was initially of prostrate type and the chromosome number was 5. In S. variabile the prostrate system predominated over the erect system, zoospore germination was strictly of prostrate type and the chromosome number was 3. In S. farctum the prostrate system was more developed than the erect system, zoospore germination was strictly of prostrate type and the chromosome number was 8. The ontogeny of zoospore germination was related to the final relative development of the prostrate and erect portions of adult thalli.
