The surfacebehavior of the aminoacid cysteine was studied by means of Langmuir monolayertechnique. The effect of charge on monolayers made of cysteine and three estersderivatives with dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine(DPPC)was investigated by preparing un-buffered and buffered (pH 4 and 8) subphases. Molecularinteractions between the cysteine derivatives L-cysteine, L-cysteine ethylester, L-cysteine methyl ester and N-acetylcysteine with DPPC monolayers werestudied measuring the change in the surface tension upon aminoacid injection in the subphasewhilst keeping lipid molecular density and lateral packing controlled. Theresults indicate that, although the different derivatives of cysteine presentedlow surface activity, they were able to favourably interact with DPPCmonolayers. Also, compression isotherms experiments in binary mixtures indicatethat the more surface active compounds stabilized the gel phase of DPPC. Thecharge on cysteine and its derivatives increased the observed effects.
