Fluoropolymer Addition to an Epoxy-Amine System: Contact Angle and Surface Composition

Resumen:
The objective of this work is to modify the surface properties of an epoxy-amine network by incorporating fluorinated oligomers, thermoplastics and solvents. In a first step fluorinated jeffamine (JMF) was prepared by reacting Jeffamine (D-230, Huntsman, Jeff) and 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7-dodecafluoroheptanoic acid (Sigma-Aldrich, AcF) in vacuum at 80ºC using a stoichiometric ratio  R=4 eqJeff/eqAcF. In a second step epoxy networks were prepared by reacting Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DER331, Dow, DGEBA) with Jeff and/or JMF (final stoichiometric ratio R=1 eqDGEBA/eq Jeff+JMF). Samples containing from 0 to 11 wt % fluorine were characterized by DSC, contact angle and XPS. Increasing the weight percent of fluorine leads to an increase in contact angle, but this effect is not constant at every part of surface. Two different values, denoted as zone A and B, were obtained in each sample. XPS confirmed elemental fluorine is higher than the expected on certain places of the sample.
