Hydration of basic refractory bricks for steelmaking vessel lining is an undesirable phenomenon that can lead to failure risk under operation. In these cases water can not only react with main oxide components such as MgO and CaO but also with carbides or other products that can be developed under operation. In this work the hydration resistance evolution of different refractory lining materials that are used in steelmaking vessels is evaluated though a set of lab tests. Results are discussed in terms of refractory materials preheating treatments, composition and microstructure
