Resumen:
The aimofthisstudywastoimprovethebondstrengthresistanceofpolyvinylacetate(PVAc)andurea-formaldehyde(UF)adhesivesmodified withnano-clay(montmorillonite)withatropicalspeciesofwoodknown toexhibitadhesionrelatedproblems.Theseadhesiveswereevaluatedwith1.0and1.5wt%nano-clay concentrationswithlapshearstrength(SS),andthepercentageofwoodfailure(PWF)indryandwet conditionsbeingevaluated.Anadditionalaimofthisstudywastoobservethepresenceofnano-claywithin bothadhesivetypesusingAtomicForceMicroscopy(AFM)andtheTransmissionElectronMicroscopy(TEM).Color,viscosityandthethermostabilityoftheseadhesiveswithnano-claywerealsoevaluated.First,AFMandTEMstudiesshowedadequatedispersionandimpregnationofnano-clay.Theviscosity ofPVAcadhesivewasnotaffectedbytheincorporationofnano-clay,whereastheUFadhesivewas.WithbothPVAcandUFadhesives,thepresenceofnano-clayincreasedthe Ln and bn colorparameters,especiallywhen1.5wt%nano-claywasused.Theincorporationofthenano-clayimprovedthermostability,asdeterminedbythermogravimetricanalysis(TGA).Finally,itwasshownthatthenano-clay incorporationimprovedSSandPWF.ThehighestvaluesofSSwereobtainedwhennano-claywasaddedat1.5wt%concentrationinthePVAcadhesiveunderdryconditions.SSwasnotaffectedbynano-clay additionintheUFadhesiveunderdryconditions.However,underwetconditions,both1.0and1.5wt%loadingsofnano-clayincreasedSSwithbothadhesivetypes.Theadditionofnano-clayinboth proportionsincreasedPWFbyapproximately15%andbetween20?30% indryandwetconditions,respectively,forthePVAcadhesive.FortheUFadhesive,PWFincreasedbyapproximately10%underdryconditions and25?50% inwetconditions
