This bioassaywasdesignedwiththeaimofexploringtheresponsesoftwowildplanktonicmicroalgae exposed in situ (72 h)asindicatorsofthechangesinwaterquality.Monoculturesofbothstrainswithin dialysismembranebagswereplacedattwositesinasmalllowlandstream.Site1islocatedata suburbanareawithlowhorticulturalactivityandSite2isimpactedbytoxicindustrialdischargesand urban landuse. There wasadecreaseinpopulationgrowthofbothspeciesatSite2comparedwithSite1.The comparisonofthealgaeexposed in situ with thenormalspecimensculturedatthelaboratoryindicated a significantincreaseinthecellularvolumeforbothspeciesatbothsites.Abnormalshapewasrecorded at bothsites,thepercentagebeingsignificantlygreaterfor Scenedesmus acutus at Site2.Significant changesinpyrenoidssizewereobservedin S. acutus and inthepercentageoffragmentednucleiin Lepocinclis acus. Alsointhelatterabnormalparamylongrainswereobserved.Theseresponseswere accentuatedatSite2.
