Resumen:
The continuousadvances in the technology of refractory materials promote the development ofmaterials operating in extreme conditions. In these circumstances, the effectsof different damage mechanisms, start to be critics and it is required toemploy characterization techniques that provide detailed information abouttheir microstructures and transformations. Conventional techniques such asoptical (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been used tocharacterize different structural aspects on refractory materials. The ElectronBackscatter Diffraction (EBSD) technique in nonconductive materials has thepotential to extract valuable information, however few works have beenperformed in refractories materials. The main goal of this paper is to report informationof Orientation Image Microscopy application, based on the automated acquisitionand indexing of EBSD patterns in Scanning Electron Microscope, to analyzemicrostructure and microtexture induced by the wear mechanisms in a submergedentry nozzle in contact with a mould flux. Through these applications, advantages of the technique will be discussed. The information is correlatedwith mould flux physical properties and the phases developed in the systemnozzle-flux predicted by thermodynamic simulation.
