The aim of this paper is to study short crack initiation during low cycle fatigue in the LDSS AL 2003. This analysis was performed on the as received material and after a homogenization heat treatment. The damage evolution was monitored in situ. Whereas in the as receive condition the first deformation lines appear in the ferrite phase and cracks nucleate along intrusion/extrusions in the same phase, in the heat treated condition although the deformation lines appear almost exclusively in the austenitic phase, the nucleation crack sites are generally phase boundaries or occasionally in the ferritic phase. Additionally the developed dislocation structure was observed and correlated with the surface damage.
