Resumen:
The fluvial fisheries of De La Plata River basin, the fifth largest in the world, play a critical role in providing food security, nutrition, and provision of livelihoods, employment and poverty alleviation, particularly in those regions inhabited by native communities that strongly depend on fish resources.Artisanal fishers are facing increasing conflicts associated with other water and land uses, such as damming, drying of floodplains for urbanization, agricultural and cattle ranching, which reduce fish habitat and access to fishing areas. As these fisheries are managed through conventional approaches based on top-down centralized command-and-control policies, current legal frameworks do not take into account fishers engagement and participation ignoring how such initiatives and landscape modifications impact on fishers? capitals and wellbeing.
