Resumen:
Fenton and photo-Fenton processes were investigated as photochemical pre-treatment to improve the biodegradability of a wastewater containing a commercial pesticide: atrazine. The effects of H2O2, Fe3+ and radiation level on the degradation processes have been studied and the optimal conditions were found. Fenton and photo-Fenton oxidation systems were able to reach 85 and 100% for removing the atrazine, respectively, in a period of 120 min. However the cyanuric acid remains in the effluent after the chemical oxidation treatment. Because of the stability of the N-heterocyclic ring of cyanuric acid, chemical or photochemical methods have shown inadequate to degrade it. For these reasons, in this work, a biological process for the biodegradation of the stable cyanuric acid was evaluated by microbial action in anaerobic conditions. The obtained results indicate that a coupled PAO?biological treatment system is a possible way to achieve the complete mineralization of biorecalcitrant pollutants.
