The flexible polyurethane foams from castor oil modified with maleic anhydride (MACO) were synthesized. The synthesis involved a single-stage process by mixing castor oil/MACO (weight ratios 75:25 and 25:75) and 2-4 toluene diisocyanate (TDI) in stoichiometric amount of OH:NCO. Their final properties were evaluated and compared with traditional polyurethane foam based on polyether. The degradation of polymers was investigated at level laboratory by enzymatic attack by Pseudomonas sp, Aspergillus niger, and Aspergillus clavatus cultures under controlled aerobic conditions. The microorganisms were isolated from soil surface of the earth. The polymers were characterized before and after biodegradation by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Instron mechanical tester, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the addition of MACO yielded less dense foams with a clear enhancement of mechanical properties. Also the biodegradation rate exhibited an increase for polymer with high content of MACO, since the ester groups are more vulnerable to chemical hydrolysis and enzymatic attack.
