All-fiber lasers have inherent advantages over bulk lasers, including their robustness and their ability to dissipate heat. These authors review different in-fiber acousto-optic devices that have recently demonstrated new possibilities for the active control of Q-switched distributed feedback and mode-locked all-fiber lasers—in other words, tools for using sound to control light.
