Resumen:
Oily sludge produced from the accumulation of crude oil materials at the bottom of storage tanks is a hazardous waste. It contains different chemical compounds, including aliphatic hydrocarbons (AH) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and other compounds of concern in environmental waste regulation [Sivagami et al., 2019].Although bioremediation is often used to treat different petrochemical wastes, their high toxicity could make it unfeasible [Hu et al. 2013]. The possibility of combining chemical oxidation technologies with biological remediation is an attractive strategy. In a previous study, bioremediation was applied using a sample of oily sludge mixed with chronically hydrocarbon contaminated soil (with a bacterial community enriched in degrading bacteria). This treatment was able to degrade 68% of AH and 38% of PAH, after 22 days of incubation. The aim of this work is to treat an oily sludge with oxidants in batch reactors before the bioremediation process to improve its performance.
