Resumen:
Among Burkholderia cepacia complex species, B. contaminans represents the most prevalent species in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) in Argentina. Although B. contaminans respiratory tract infections may be transient, its acquisition generally results in a chronic pulmonary infection very difficult to eradicate even under aggressive antimicrobials treatments. Throughout the course of chronic infections these organisms undergo adaptations that contribute to their long-term persistence in the airways. The aim of this investigation was to study the phenotypic and genotypic changes of isolates consecutively recovered along B. contaminans chronic lung infections in children with CF, and to analyze if those changes were related or reflected in patients? clinical outcome.
