Resumen:
Flame retardant coatings with anticorrosive properties were formulated to protect metallic structures of buildings. Experimental coatings were based on a chlorinated alkyd resin manufactured at laboratory and on several pigments such as rutile titanium dioxide for improving hiding power, micaceous iron oxide for controlling film permeability, zinc hidroxiphosphite for corrosion prevention and finally antimony trioxide,  zinc borate or alumina trihydrate alone or else a mixture among them for acting as fireproofing. SAE 1010 test panels, sandblasted to ASa 2 ½ (SIS 05 59 00/1967) to get approximately 30 mm of maximun roughness (Rm), were employed. The formulated and manufactured coatings were applied by brush attaining 100-110 mm dry film thickness. Then, their inhibiting behavior was assessed in salt spray (fog) testing and in 100 % relative humidity cabinet while the fire retardant capacity was established by determining the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and flame spread value (Two Foot Tunnel).
