PANICEAE Paniceae R. Brown, in M. Flinders, Voy. Terra austr. 2: 582. 1814. Annual or perennials, rhizomatous to caespitose plants, with herbaceous to woody? culms. Ligules membranous to ciliate, occasionally absent. Inflorescences a lax to contracted, spiciform panicle or formed by one to many unilateral racemes. Spikelets solitary or paired, with or without involucral setae, biflowered, dorsiventrally compressed, lateral compression occasionally present, dissarticulating below the glumes, and with or without a second dissarticulation below the upper anthecium. Glumes and lower lemma membranous to herbaceous, obtuse or acute, occasionally awned. Lower palea absent or present, hyaline; lower flower staminate or absent. Upper anthecium indurated, less frequently cartilagineous or membranous; upper flower perfect, lodicules 2, anthers 3. Caryopsis with hilum punctiform to oblong, occasionally linear. Plants Kranz or non Kranz. Basic chromosome number x = 9, 10.  A tribe with approximately 100 genera and 2000 species, worldwide distributed mostly in tropical and subtropical regions.
