Resumen:
Oxidative stress generated by xenobiotics, bacteria, bile acids or oxidized food debris contributes to inflammatory diseases and cancer in the gastrointestinal tract. The intake of cruciferous such as Eruca vesicaria (E.v., commercial arugula), source of vitamin C, flavonoids and glucosinolates, has grown extensively in Argentina. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the oxidative balance and the lipid profile after chronic intake of E.v. fresh leaves extracts.Adult male and female Sprague-Dawley rats (5 months old) wererandomlyseparatedforadministrationofeither 2g/kg juice (Juice), 100mg/kg methanolicextractresuspended in water (ME)- richer in polyphenols and glucosinolates than Juice- or saline solution by gavage, 3 times/week, during 4 weeks. After euthanasia, serumtriglycerides and cholesterol; epididymal or supraovaric adipocyte area; duodenal, jejunal, ileal, colonic and hepatic lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and antioxidant enzymes activity catalase and superoxide dismutase were measured. Statistical analyses were performed by ANOVA/Bonferroni (n=6/group).Hypertriglyceridemia (p
