Quiescence is a well-known plant strategy aimed at increasing survival under complete submergence by conserving reserves to resume growth after water recedes. However, the significance of seed dormancy as a quiescence strategy to avoid lethal underwater germination and defer seedling growth until the post-flooding period has not been explored. We studied the control of hypoxic floodwaters on seed dormancy on an Echinochloa crus-galli accession whose seeds are not able to germinate under hypoxia.
