Resumen:
31 capítulos multiautorales. Chapter 1 Xenarthran biology: past, present, and future Sergio F. Vizcaíno and W. J. Loughry Abstract The Xenarthra are one of the major clades of placental mammals. Both living and fossil forms possess a number of unusual features that make these animals highly desirable study subjects. Yet, in contrast to many other mammalian groups, the Xenarthra seem surprisingly neglected. Here we provide an overview of what makes these animals special and scientifically interesting. This discussion allows us to outline what we already know about the Xenarthra, and, as exemplified by this book, what is currently being done. In addition, we hope to point toward those areas that remain unexplored and deserving of future study.
