Resumen:
Modern maize hybrids (Zea mays L.) are more tolerant to stress than older hybrids and there are differences in yield stability between modern hybrids. The objectives of this research were (i) to quantify yield and shoot biomass production and (ii) to determine water consumption and water-use efficiency (WUE) under different soil water status, in maize hybrids contrasting in yield response to general stress. Experiments were conducted during two growing seasons and an old hybrid and two modern hybrids with contrasting stability were evaluated under three different soil water availabilities. Grain yield was similar between modern hybrids and was lower in the older hybrid under stress treatments. Yield reduction relative to the irrigated treatment was greater in the older hybrid under water stress. Water consumption was similar among hybrids in each treatment and the maintenance of a higher yield under water stress in the modern hybrids was mainly related with greater WUE.
