Selectivity in Studies of Laser-induced Isotope Separation in Pulsed Free Expansions of SF6 and UF6

Experimental results on isotopic selective laser-excitation of SF6 and UF6 molecules are presented. The experiments were performed irradiating pulses of cold molecular gas beams with infrared pulsed lasers. Mixtures of SF6 and UF6 diluted in Ar were cooled by isentropic expansion through a nozzle before irradiation by infrared laser pulses exciting the ν3 vibrational mode of the molecule. Final products were characterized by a time-of-flight spectrometer.Present results show a strong laserinduced modification of monomer and dimer population. The obtained isotopic selectivity was 1.120±0.014 for SF6 and 1.051±0.014 for UF6.
