Study on the optical fiber attenuation of the UMD using the binary channel

Pierre Auger Internal GAP Note 034 (2021) /// In this GAP note, we present a study on the optical fiber attenuation in the UMD using more than two and a half years of data of the binary channel. For each scintillator in the field, the mean number of ones in the trace over the events was computed. Consistently with laboratory measurements, this observable showed a clear anti correlation with the fiber length, which is attributed to the attenuation of photons in the fiber. Finally, a phenomenological model was used to fit the data to obtain an overall characterization of the attenuation in the scintillators fibers.
