Galectins(Gals) are animal lectins with high affinity for ß-galactosides viacarbohydrates recognition domains that drives the immune response by severalmechanisms. In particular,Galectin-8 (Gal-8) has been involved in the regulation of both, homeostatic andpathological processes. The role of Gal-8 on the inflammatory response remainscontroversial. To analyze it we infected mice with Trypanosomacruzi, the causal agent of Chagas disease, as model of chronic inflammatorydisease. Infected C57BL/6J (iWT) and Gal-8 deficient mice (iGal-8KO) were analyzed at 4 monthspost-infection. The absence of Gal-8 favorsinflammation development in liver, skeletal muscle and heart during infection,but do not modified fibrosis levels. Fibrosisdegree follows the inflammation level. An increase of neutrophils andmacrophages M2-type in iGal-8KO was observed in heart, by flow cytometry analysis.Similar values of specific chemoattractans were detected in cardiac lysates andserum samples from both infected mice groups.
