Resumen:
Furfural, (Furan-2-carbaldehyde) is a recalcitrant and potentially toxic substance. Bacterial consortium naturally adapted to that contaminant was isolated and identified by PCR-amplification and 16S-rRNA-gene-sequencing method, as Microbacterium sp., the Bacillus licheniformis and the Brevundimonas sp. The aim of this work was to determine furfural maximum concentration to which the consortium may grow and degrade. Colonies were activating in peptone solution and afterwards in a mineral medium M9 with glucose as co-substrate, adding bacterial consortium and 722 up to 4516 ppm of furfural and incubated for72 hours in 30ºC, in dark with 200rpm agitation. Bacterial growth was monitored by 610nm absorbance measure. Furfural concentration was analyzed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Consortium was capable of growing with up to 4516 ppm of furfural. Up to 2723 ppm it can degrade in 24 hours. It is possible a sustainable increase of furfural consumption with a consortium, regarding to the individually bacteria.
