Resumen:
Hydrogels are defined as cross-linked hydrophilic polymer networks that have the ability to swell without dissolving in water. They have had growing interest in medical and pharmaceutical applications1.Physical hydrogels can be formed by certain polyelectrolyte complex solutions (PECs). They are obtained by combining cationic polyelectrolyte with anionic polyelectrolyte creating various reversible links2. The ionic interaction of PECs can be reinforced by the addition of sodium citrate as ionic crosslinking agent. The crystalline domains of xylan contribute to maintaining the integrity of hydrogels, even at extreme pH.
