Resumen:
In the past few years there has been an increase in the frequency of intensity of the toxic Cyanobacteria
blooms around the world, which has produced deep sanitary, economic and environmental impacts. In the R¨ªo
de la Plata basin, the only identified toxins, microcystins, turned out to be synthetised by Microcystis aeruginosa.Microcystis aeruginosa.
The chronical poisonings with mild doses of microcystins encourage the tumour formation, evidencing a correlation
between primary liver cancer and Cyanobacteria blooms in freshwater environments used as drinking water
supply. In the present work it is evaluated the presence of M. aeruginosa and microcystins in the coastal zone
of the R¨ªo de la Plata estuary, Ensenada and in different areas of the tap water net in the cities of Ensenada and
La Plata (Argentina). For such purpose, research was carried out between December 2006 and March 2007,
analyzing physichal, chemical and biological parametres. The microcystins were analyzed via the HPLC-UV
method. The studied samples evidenced the constant presence of M. aeruginosa in the R¨ªo de la Plata estuary,
frequently generating blooms. Such phenomena have a direct impact on the tap water quality. Several
phytoplanctonic taxa, particularly M. aeruginosa, were detected in every considered area of the domiciliary net.
As regards microcystins, their values in the tap water in several moments are higher than 1 ¦Ìg-1, whereas it
was shown a decrease in the drinking water concentration, from the region nearby the plant to the furthest
ones. Hence, it is evident that the water treatment conditions in the area are inneficient and do not abide by the
current legislation.
