Despite the very broad differences betwen the diferent cases,discussion of the nature of Latin American dictatorial regimes has sought toaccount for a series of keys to interpretation which focus heavily on what areconsidered their common traits.  In thiswork, we review the main contributions to these discussions, selecting the mostsignificant ones to shed light on the ways in which the notions ofauthoritarianism, nationalism and fascism have been used to account for thenature and ideological orientations of dictatorial regimes in the SouthernCone.
