The Upgrade of the Pierre Auger Observatory

The Pierre Auger Observatory is the largest ultra high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) observatory on Earth. After more than 10 years of operation, it provides a unique dataset, with significant statistics up to the highest energies.In order to pinpoint the astrophysical origin of the UHECR, composition has to be estimated on an event by event basis for the full dataset. To achieve this goal, the Pierre Auger Observatory will be upgraded for the period 2015-2025 by adding a complementary scintillator detector to all water Cherenkov detectors in order to separate the electromagnetic and the muonic components of the extended air shower measured.In this presentation, the design, performance and science outcome expected for the upgrade will be discussed.
