Resumen:
Adsorption of lead from water solutions by smectite clays was studied. A sodic Argentine montmorillonite from Minarmco Co, was used, PJ-Na, and after intercalation with aluminum polyhydroxide, PJ-Al. Lead adsorption was well described with Langmuir model. The adsorption maximum of Pb2+ (qmax) obtained from Langmuir linearized isotherm for PJ-Na sorbent was 67,80 mg Pb2+ g-1 and 14,99 mgPb2+ / of clay  (qmax) obtained from Langmuir linearized isotherm for PJ-Na  sorbent was 67,80 mg Pb2+/ g of clay and 14,99 mgPb2+ /g  of clay and 14,99 mgPb2+ / g of clay for PJ-Al. These results reveal that intercalation of clay with Al polyhydroxides inhibit the adsorption of lead. This behavior may be related with the decrease of the number of cationic exchange sites or a decrease in their accesibility produced by intercalation process.
