In this paper we present non-puncturednon-systematic ½-rate turbo codes designed usingFinite State Sequential Machines (FSSMs) thatoperate over the Finite Field GF(4). It is shown inthis paper that these schemes do not showconvergence problems in their iterative decoding, asit happens to similar schemes defined over thebinary Field. Non-systematic turbo codes can beuseful for the design of communication systems forwhich error correction and encryption are twoimportant goals.A relationship is found between the statetransitions structure of the FSSM and the BERperformance (or equivalently the form of the EXITchart) of the turbo code constructed using thatFSSM. FSSMs defined over GF(4) with all-zeroinput responses of the form of closed cycles are thebest options as constituent encoders of nonpuncturednon-systematic ½-rate turbo codes. Aclose relationship is also found between the BERperformance and the coefficients that define thestructure of the FSSM that constitutes the turbocode.
